Real wood veneers can look fabulous against painted cabinetry, but they may not be as practical as synthetic surfaces when it comes to wear. When using real wood veneers the finishing process becomes absolutely imperative if you want your kitchen to have any kind of longevity. Hard wearing sprayed finishes are great for being durable, but need to be applied in a spray booth, making them more difficult to maintain later down the road. Oils and waxes offer less protection, but are very simple to renew once in place, by simply wiping them over with another coat of finish. On our cabinets we like to try to get the best of both worlds. Ordinarily we start by first applying a sprayed 2k lacquer (which is very tough and durable), we then applying a hard wax paste finish over the top of this. The wax protects the lacquer, is easy to renew and really brings out the rich colour of the wood grain.
